Vienna. On Monday, Minister of the Interior Karl Nehammer announced tightened police controls for the hard lockdown. First the officers would “always seek dialogue and de-escalation” and only then they would impose penalty, Nehammer said. If a police check were to take place, then it would always be a matter of “making it credible”. One counts on the exchange with the population, “but there must not be any major meetings,” says the Minister of the Interior and gives an example: A fireman who meets with three colleagues in front of a club restaurant “is to be avoided at all costs,” Nehammer said in the “Ö1” morning journal.
“Single means single. Accumulations are to be avoided. All meetings that are not necessary should be avoided,” says the Minister of the Interior. “Larger gatherings in the public space are not useful and are also not allowed.
Nehammer says that the police will punish violations rigorously if there is a lack of understanding of the measures. According to the lockdown penalty catalog, a missing mask costs 25 euros. If the safety distance is not maintained, the police can impose a fine of 50 euros. If a complaint is filed, a fine of up to 1,450 euros may be imposed.
